Amending the VAWA

Along with the help of Senator Peri Dupepe, Senator Nicholl is working to amend the VAWA. She is looking to create law that provides information to college students on sexual assaults, provides colleges with offices where students with problems concerning sexual violence can  seek assitance and to  limit federal funding for universities to universities that hold sexual safety as a priority.

Recently, on March 7th, President Obama signed the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women’s Act. This reauthorization is now valid for another five years. There were many changes and conditions that were altered with the reauthorization of this act.

 Current Status of VAWA

Though the bill is bi-partisan, democrats are known for greatly supporting the VAWA, in 2013 when an extension of the bill went to be passed the there was unanimous support for democrats (2). Originally the act was signed and published by democratic President Bill Clinton
